The ideas come from the talents of the existing workforce, as opposed to using research, consultants or equipment – any of which could be very expensive.Small improvements are less likely to require major capital investment than major process changes. As the ideas come from the workers themselves, they are less likely to be radically different, and therefore easier to implement.Improvements are based on many small changes rather than the radical changes that might arise from Research and Development.Evolution: The emphasis of CIP is on incremental, continual steps rather than giant leaps.Efficiency: The purpose of CIP is the identification, reduction, and elimination of suboptimal processes.Feedback: The core principle of CIP is the (self) reflection of processes. This method became famous from Imai's 1986 book Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success. Some successful implementations use the approach known as kaizen (the translation of kai ('change') zen ('good') is 'improvement'). Put simply, it means 'getting better all the time'.' " : 498 Kaizen Improvement in business strategy, business results, customer, employee and supplier relationships can be subject to continual improvement. It is not limited to quality initiatives. focused on increasing the effectiveness and/or efficiency of an organisation to fulfil its policy and objectives. Ī broader definition is that of the Institute of Quality Assurance who defined "continuous improvement as a gradual never-ending change which is: '. The fact that it can be called a management process does not mean that it needs to be executed by 'management' but rather merely that it makes decisions about the implementation of the delivery process and the design of the delivery process itself. Edwards Deming, a pioneer of the field, saw it as part of the 'system' whereby feedback from the process and customer were evaluated against organisational goals. Some see CIPs as a meta-process for most management systems (such as business process management, quality management, project management, and program management). Delivery (customer valued) processes are constantly evaluated and improved in the light of their efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility. These efforts can seek " incremental" improvement over time or "breakthrough" improvement all at once. Ongoing effort to improve products, services, or processesĪ continual improvement process, also often called a continuous improvement process (abbreviated as CIP or CI), is an ongoing effort to improve products, services, or processes.

While it’s true that you're more limited in scope and some features aren't available, on the whole, the free version of Microsoft Word will get the job done sufficiently for most people. Alternative applications, like Google Docs, are on the scene, forcing Microsoft to offer Word for free just to compete. This has left the door open for Google Docs and other word processors and document editors to offer their subpar services for free, which is an extremely compelling offer considering Word and Docs are somewhat similar on the surface.Īs previously mentioned, Microsoft Word has more competition than ever, especially beyond the paywall. The most upsetting thing about Word is that it's been hidden behind a paywall for most of the past 30 years. interests, legal scholars say such authority has never been used the way Trump has proposed.īackground: Under Trump’s newly announced policy of “extreme vetting,” immigrants who sympathize with terrorists, are hostile toward the United States or believe Sharia should supersede U.S. While federal immigration law lets the president bar entry of aliens who would be detrimental to U.S. “I wish the first time it was done correctly.” On Vetting ImmigrantsĬlaim: Trump could use federal legal authority to implement his “extreme vetting” proposal. “Yeah, I guess so,” Trump responded when asked by Stern if he supported an invasion. Trump’s full response was, “Well, he has either got to do something or not do something, perhaps, because perhaps shouldn’t be doing it yet and perhaps we should be waiting for the United Nations, you know. In the interview Cavuto asked Trump, “So you’re saying the leash on this is getting kind of short here, that the president has got to do something presumably sooner rather than later and stringing this along could ultimately hurt us.” 28, 2003, interview with Fox News’ Cavuto as proof that he opposed the war in Iraq before it began. Researchers estimate that 23 to 27 honor killings occur in the United States every year, according to Westat, the corporation that conducted the report. This kind of violence is typified by an intent to repair or prevent further damage to a family’s honor and, according to the study, is “most prevalent among people from Islamic regions of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.” The Department of Justice last year commissioned a comprehensive study that estimated 23 to 27 honor killings occur every year in the U.S.īackground: A Department of Justice–commissioned study last year shed light on several startling findings about honor killings. Muammar Gaddafi.Įarlier this year, Obama acknowledged in a Fox News interview that failing to prepare for the aftermath of Gaddafi’s overthrow was his biggest mistake while in office.Īsked about the worst mistake of his presidency, Obama replied, “Probably failing to plan for the day after, what I think was the right thing to do, in intervening in Libya.” On Honor KillingsĬlaim: Many cases of honor killings have occurred in the United States. The patient is very close to death with irregular respirations around 8 breaths per minute. A patient whose death is imminent is in pain and requires pain medication to maintain comfort. An example of this is the all too common clinical situation that occurs in end-of-life care. If the act is for a greater good for the patient and is not meant to deliberately harm them, it is justifiable. Sometimes harm may be caused to a patient in order to prevent them from further harm. Although some of the interventions that patients receive might cause pain or some harm, nonmaleficence refers to the moral justification behind why the harm is caused. Nonmaleficence is the principle of refraining from causing unnecessary harm. While the nurse has grown fond of this patient and would not want him to die, they must respect the patient’s wishes and choices for his own medical care. This patient has decided to stop his cancer treatments and focus on spending time enjoying his family for the time he has left. For example, a nurse has been caring for an elderly gentleman for several months as he has been receiving treatment for cancer. While a nurse might not agree with a patient’s decision, they must support it. As nurses, we must support and advocate for our patients’ rights, including their right to make decisions. Sometimes it can be difficult to see a patient make a decision about their health that the nurse does not personally agree with or that the nurse does not feel is the best decision for that patient’s individual circumstances. This principle is described as an agreement to respect another’s right to self-determine a course of action and to support another’s independent decision making (ANA, 2015). The goal of this chapter is to provide a basic understanding about ethical principles and to explore issues surrounding the issues that can arise during end of life decisions in patients who are nearing the end of life. After several evaluations, the child was determined to be medically brain dead, and therefore continuation of medical treatments was considered to be futile. In this case, the family wanted to continue to keep their young daughter on life support which conflicted with what the health care facility wanted. This was evident in the recent national news story about 13-year old Jahi McMath (Fox News, 2013). Other times, the insurance or health care system has specific criteria that may come in conflict with the goals and values of the patient or family. Sometimes, there can be conflicts between what the clinicians believe to be best for the patient and what the patient and family want to have done. In the clinical setting, it is not uncommon to witness conflicts between the patient’s wishes and those of their family. Some of these are related to what kinds of medical treatments they would want to have if they were no longer able to make their own decisions. Often as patients near the end of life, many difficult decisions will have to be made. These are the goals the patient wishes for in terms of their illness. These goals are based on the patient’s moral principles and values. By having an understanding about some of the issues that can arise during end of life decisions, the nursing student or novice nurse can be better prepared for what to expect and how best to handle ethical issues.Īs discussed in Chapter 5, patients’ goals of care are what patients place highest value on and would hope to achieve in regard to their illness. As nurses, sometimes our morals and values are in conflict with those that our patients have, and this can cause some distress for the nurse. There are often ethical issues that can arise in the context of end-of-life care, particularly when patients and families make decisions regarding the care they will accept or not accept. \( \newcommand\)Įthics is a branch of philosophy that is focused on understanding the moral principles of people and how they make decisions based on what is considered morally right or wrong (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Similarly, the breviate Pygsuia biforma apparently replaced the ISC system with an archeal SUF system. The NIF system operates in the cytosol of Entamoeba histolytica or in the cytosol and hydrogenosomes of Mastigamoeba balamuthi. Archamoebae replaced the ISC pathway with two components of a nitrogen-fixing (NIF) machinery that were acquired by lateral gene transfer (LGT) from ɛ-proteobacteria. There are few known exceptions to the highly conserved setup of FeS assembly machineries, and all these exceptions concern protists adapted to anaerobic or microaerobic conditions with modified mitochondria. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the CIA pathway was present in the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) and that its components are predominantly of bacterial origin. The ISC machinery is functionally linked to the third system, the cytosolic FeS cluster assembly (CIA) machinery. The pathway in plastids is called the sulfur utilization factor (SUF) system, which is present in primary as well as secondary plastids. The mitochondrial FeS cluster assembly (ISC) machinery operates in nearly all forms of mitochondria including anaerobic hydrogenosomes and highly reduced mitosomes. The organellar pathways were acquired through endosymbiosis of α-proteobacteria and cyanobacteria that evolved into mitochondria and plastids, respectively. In eukaryotes, there are three main pathways, which are localized in distinct cellular compartments: mitochondria, plastids, and the cytosol. Iron-sulfur (FeS) cluster assembly pathways are essential for all three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. Because plastid localization of HCF101 was only known thus far, the discovery of its mitochondrial paralog explains confusion regarding the presence of HCF101 in organisms that possibly lost secondary plastids (e.g., ciliates, Cryptosporidium) or possess reduced nonphotosynthetic plastids (apicomplexans). Our searches for Nbp35-like proteins across eukaryotic lineages revealed that SAR, Haptista, and Cryptista possess mitochondrial HCF101. Interestingly, phylogenetic analysis supports rather a lateral gene transfer of ancestral HCF101 from bacteria than its acquisition being associated with either α-proteobacterial or cyanobacterial endosymbionts. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that chHCF101 and mHCF101 evolved from a common ancestral HCF101 independently of the Nbp35/Cfd1 and Ind1 proteins. Our predictions were experimentally confirmed in selected representatives of Apicomplexa ( Toxoplasma gondii), Stramenopila ( Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira pseudonana), and Ciliophora ( Tetrahymena thermophila) by tagging proteins with a transgenic reporter. We also identified a few exceptions, as apicomplexans possess mHCF101 predicted to localize in the cytosol and Nbp35 in the mitochondria. Surprisingly, we found a second HCF101 paralog in all members of Cryptista, Haptista, and SAR that was predicted to predominantly target mitochondria (mHCF101), whereas Ind1 appeared to be absent in these organisms. Nbp35 and Cfd1 were predicted to reside in the cytoplasm with some exceptions of Nbp35 localization to the mitochondria Ind1was found in the mitochondria, and HCF101 was predicted to reside in plastids (chHCF101) of all photosynthetically active eukaryotes. We searched for the genes of all members of the Nbp35-like protein family and analyzed their targeting sequences. To date, the cellular distribution of these proteins is considered to be highly conserved with only a few exceptions. The AbpC protein operates in Bacteria and Archaea. In eukaryotes, Ind1 is present in mitochondria, and its function is associated with the assembly of FeS clusters in subunits of respiratory Complex I, Nbp35 and Cfd1 are the components of the cytosolic FeS assembly (CIA) pathway, and HCF101 is involved in FeS assembly of photosystem I in plastids of plants (chHCF101). Nbp35-like proteins (Nbp35, Cfd1, HCF101, Ind1, and AbpC) are P-loop NTPases that serve as components of iron-sulfur cluster (FeS) assembly machineries. G.SKILL Trident Z DDR4 4000 Royal Features As you might know, Samsung B-DIE has become synonymous with high frequency and tight timings. This is because the rated speed of 4000MHz with tight timings of CL17-17-17 is practically impossible to achieve with other IC manufacturers, such as Hynix. This memory uses a total of 8 ICs, all of which are located on only one side. Thaiphoon Burner InformationĪs the Thaiphoon Burner screenshot shows, this specific kit of memory is composed of Samsung B-DIE ICs. Furthermore, to a sharp observer, the rated speed of 4000MHz with CAS 17 is a good indicator that this kit of memory is using B-DIE ICs. The SPD information is critical in determining how the stick will perform and how the computer will recognize it. Below is a screenshot of Thaiphoon Burner, which is a wonderful free tool that allows one to read the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) firmware of the DRAM. This kit of memory comes with a very fast XMP 2.0 profile of 4000MHz with primary timings of CL17-17-17.įor those interested, here is a closer look at the particular details of this kit of memory. The XMP is a memory profile stored inside the actual memory, which allows the user to easily apply the rated frequency and timings.
